Editorial
Since the Persons and Companies Act (PGR) came into force in 1926, most provisions of Liechtenstein trust law have remained largely unchanged. Almost a century later, the Parliament of the Principality of Liechtenstein has enacted a comprehensive partial revision aimed at “optimizing trust law”.
Starting 1 July 2026, the Liechtenstein legislator will introduce a fundamentally new approach to trust governance under Articles 897 et seq. PGR through the creation of the “Informationsberechtigter” (corresponds enforcer with rights to information). In contrast to the Anglo-Saxon model, where, under the beneficiary principle, trust control is generally exercised solely by the beneficiaries. These recent reforms present both opportunities and challenges in the competitive landscape of global legal systems. Against this backdrop, the first part of the Liechtenstein Trust Conference will focus specifically on these upcoming changes in Liechtenstein trust law, with particular emphasis on the duties and powers of the "Informationsberechtigter” and the evolving role of the beneficiaries. Finally, an international perspective is taken on the Liechtenstein reform.
In practice, Liechtenstein trust law often involves cross-border matters. The second part of the conference will therefore deal with English and International Trust Law. The focus will be on current issues relating the enforceability of claims, trustee control mechanisms, and overall trust governance. Presentations will provide a comparative perspective, investigating recent academic and practical developments in England, Bermuda, Singapore and South Africa.
The conference features internationally recognized experts from both academia and practice, and participants will have ample opportunity to pose questions following each presentation. The conference will be conducted in German and in English.
We are delighted to welcome you in person to the Trust Conference 2026 – “Reform of Liechtenstein Trust Law and developments in the English and International Trust Law” on 5 March 2026.
